A few weeks ago, I started to think up ideas on how to get some things done. One of the ways I tried to get that done was by having a journal so I can work on getting some ideas down no matter where I was. I’m one of those people who likes to think on paper, so I was grateful to have received a beautiful notebook from a friend of mine. I started to jot down some things, both in the notebook, as well as the journal. I realized that there was a recurring concept that I had to deal with, and that was Time. A huge part of me was terrified about getting started on some of these ideas, so like a scared cat, I decided to stay in hiding and actually started to overthink things. Is it just me, or does it just happen that when you start to worry, the things you didn’t notice before becomes glaringly obvious? Some things started to make it seem like I indeed might fail, and as a result, I have to be really cautious when it comes to doing things that will affect my life in a big way.
However, after praying about these things and evaluating my actions, something occurred to me- don’t fear failure; fear time wasted. The more I wonder if I’m going to fail, the more I procrastinate and wouldn’t work on the things I ought to work on. No matter how scared you are about doing something, you really wouldn’t know the result of that thing until you start to try it out. The more I procrastinated, the more overwhelming the task became. The annoying thing about wasting time with something is that you start to doubt yourself. In the process of doubting yourself, you start to make comparisons. There are people who are doing things they thought they wouldn’t be able to handle. Rather than taking that up as a challenge, you start to envy them. Oh, I wish I could do what that person is doing right now. It’s probably because the person has a strong support system. That person has more opportunities than I do and that’s why it’s working for them. That’s a very wrong attitude. Never assume you know about someone’s success stories until you’ve heard what they’ve been through. Don’t be misguided in your self-wallowing that you start to put down the people who you should be learning from. You see, I finally found one good use for comparison- If that person can do it, then so can I. I’ve been working on something for the past four months, and I just realized that it’s bout time I faced the challenge head-on.
This brings me to a particular person in the Bible who has gained so much respect from us that for generations to come, we want to be linked with him. He is known as the father of faith. However, that’s not the only thing significant about him. He has also been known to throw caution to the wind. Who wouldn’t have had to brood over the fact that he has to sacrifice someone he has spent his years pining for? I mean, I know I trust God, but I think a part of me would have thought about other alternatives. But then again, we have the Holy Spirit, right? I’m guessing the Holy Spirit would have comforted me and given me the strength to do it. It was recorded that the very next morning, Abraham called his son and some servants, and took with him the materials necessary for making a sacrifice. Don’t you think Abraham’s heart was bleeding at the time? He didn’t give that a thought. Rather, he focused more on obeying God’s will than satisfying himself.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m saying not to waste time with things you should do. I’m not in any way suggesting that you shouldn’t be cautious. It’s important to always make sure it’s the right thing. If someone is telling you to do something, you can trust, but verify. The best person to verify from is God. When you get your response, don’t let anything hold you back from doing what you should do. I like the lyrics of one song that’s been in my head for a while now- When God is in it, there is no limit. You shouldn’t be your own biggest obstacle because you are scared to get started. When you trust God with your actions, you might be the very next person that will be envied because those things you didn’t want to do have now become quite easy for you to handle.
